This policy covers the Can My Pet Eat iPhone app. The website privacy policy is a separate document and covers canmypeteat.org, which uses analytics, advertising and affiliate links. None of that exists in the app.
The short version
There is no account. We do not know who you are. The app contains no advertising, no analytics SDK, no crash reporting service, and no third-party frameworks of any kind. Nothing in it tracks you across other apps or websites.
What stays on your device
Most answers are compiled into the app itself and are read with no network request at all. The following never leave your phone:
- Your recent searches.
- The pet species you selected.
- Any answer the app retrieved earlier and saved for offline use.
Deleting the app erases all of it. You can also erase it at any time without uninstalling: open About (the ⓘ button) and tap Clear recent searches and saved answers.
What is sent, and only when
If you look up a food that is not already built into the app, the app sends
one request to our own server at api.canmypeteat.org containing:
- The food you typed, normalised and truncated.
- The pet species you selected.
- An anonymous installation identifier — a random UUID generated on your device the first time the app runs.
That identifier is not your Apple advertising identifier, is not derived from your hardware, and cannot be linked back to you or to any other app. Deleting the app discards it permanently.
It is used for exactly one purpose: as the key of a counter that limits how many new lookups can be requested per day, so the service cannot be run up as a bill by automated abuse. The counter stores a number and nothing else, and it expires within 36 hours.
What we keep, and what we deliberately do not
We keep an aggregate record of which foods people look up — the species, the food, and the search term — to decide which guides to write next.
That record contains no identifier of any kind. No installation UUID, no IP address, no session. It is not possible for us to join two lookups back to the same person. This is a deliberate design decision, not an oversight, and the code is written so that the two are never stored together.
What we never collect
We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, location, health data, or payment information. The app never asks for these and holds no permission to read them.
Children
The app is rated 4+ and is suitable for all ages. Because it collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children. It contains no advertising and no external links other than the ones described below.
Links that leave the app
Two features open something outside the app:
- Find an emergency vet nearby opens Apple Maps with a search term suited to your pet’s species. We do not send your location anywhere; Apple Maps handles the search using whatever location permission you have granted to Apple Maps itself.
- The follow links open canmypeteat.org, YouTube and Pinterest in your browser. Those services have their own privacy policies.
Your rights
Because nothing on our servers is linked to you, we hold no personal data to access, correct, export, or delete.
To remove everything the app has stored on your device, use Clear recent searches and saved answers in the About screen, or delete the app.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever starts collecting something new, this page will be updated before that version ships, and the change will be described here rather than quietly folded in.
